Ph. D. Dissertation Proposal

for spatialized music.
SMT Proposal
This proposal was accepted for the 2006 joint SMT/AMS meeting that
will happen in November. It's a condensation of many ideas in my dissertation proposal,
but it also presents some new analyses I've done using some of the software developed

One-Page Essay: The Art of Diminution and Augmentation in Stockhausen's In Freundschaft
I started this idea of writing one-page "papers" with the hope that I could
use a limited amount of space still to present interesting and useful ideas in music theory.
This paper focuses on the technique Stockhausen used to compose the two melodic lines in his
solo work In Freundschaft, and offers a new formula that can be used to compose
lines with similiar properties.
One-Page Essay: A Closing for the
Prelude of J. S. Bach's Suite No. 2 in D Minor for Solo Violoncello, BWV 1008
This one-page paper presents a closing I composed for the last five
measures of this cello suite.
Karg-Elert's Polaristische Klang- und Tonalitätslehre
Karg-Elert put forth a very interesting system of harmony in the 1920s. This handout is an attempt to
summarize some of his chord-types and explain two analyses.
Senior Undergraduate Thesis: Enharmonic Relationships and Chromatic Complexity in Mozart's D Major Piano Concerto, K. 537
OK, so this is not really the best writing ever, but I thought I'd put it
here anyway -- my senior college thesis!
